of Martin Oates who, at age 9 years, migrated to Ballarat in Victoria,
Australia from Cornwall England in 1858 with his mother Elizabeth
and two brothers on board the clipper,
Champion of the Seas to join
his father Thomas
who had already migrated to Australia.
Thomas Oates
was a copper miner in St
Agnes Cornwall.
Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in Chewton, Victoria.

Martin Oates married Agnes
Mathilda Rohlk in 1876 and when Martin died
in 1902, his wife and family
moved to Perth Western Australia.
One of Martin's sons was Otto Astmas
Oates, who married
Ellen Rose Salenburger in 1913 and their son Herbert Otto
Oates,
was the father of Jeffrey.
